The Arizona Coyotes began their life as the original Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and started playing in the 1972-73 season. They joined the NHL for the 1979-80 season when the league absorbed the WHA and the team remained in Winnipeg through the 1995-96 season. In Winnipeg, the team made the playoffs 11 times in 17 NHL seasons but never made it past the division finals. Prior to the 1996-97 season, the team relocated to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes, although they changed their location name from Phoenix to Arizona for the 2014-15 season. Since joining the NHL, the Coyotes/Jets have made the playoffs 20 times but have only made the conference finals one time.

In light of that, there’s plenty of pressure to get the jerseys right, the arena situated, and especially, the team name.
