BU and UMass-Lowell get big wins

It was a busy week in Hockey East last week so lets get down to business.

Boston College

They earned a split on the week as they defeated the Providence College Friars 4-1 on Tuesday night.  Barry Almeida had two goals and freshman Brian Billett made 16 saves for his third victory of the season. On Friday, they dropped a 3-2 decision to Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks. Almeida added another goal in the loss.

Boston University

They have closed within one point of the Boston College Eagles for first place in Hockey East as they defeated New Hampshire on Thursday 2-1 and beat Maine 5-1 on Saturday. Wade Megan and Corey Trivino scored on Thursday. Corey Trivino added two more goals on Saturday while Adam Clendening had three assists.

The Warriors earned three points last week with a 5-2 victory over Vermont where  Jeff Velleca had two goals. They traveled to Colgate on Saturday where they earned a 1-1 tie where Joe Cannata made 31 saves.

The River Hawks continue to climb the standings as they earned the big 3-2 win over the Boston College Eagles.  David Vallorani had a goal and an assist in the victory. The next night they faced the Northeastern Huskies who are riding the hot hand also. The Huskies defeated Lowell 3-2. Scott Wilson recorded his 6 goal of the year for UMass-Lowell.

It wasn’t the way the Friars wanted to end the first semester with a 4-1 loss to Boston College. Derek Army picked up the lone goal for the Friars. They return to the ice on New Year’s Day to face cross town rival Brown.

You have to think the burners on head coach Tim Whitehead’s seat are getting warmer. They were hanging with the Boston University Terriers for two periods before the wheels fell of the wagon as they lost 5-1. Friends of Maine Hockey released this video last week.

As stated above, the Huskies earned a victory against UMass-Lowell in their lone game of the week. Chris Rawlings made 38 saves in the victory as Adam Reid,  Anthony Bitetto, and Steve Quailer were the goal scorers.

New Hampshire

A tough 2-1 loss to Boston University on Thursday. They jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Greg Burke’s goal in the first period.

The Minuteman pulled of the upset of Yale Wednesday night as they defeated the Bulldogs 3-1. The goal scorers were  Peter DeAngelo, Branden Gracel, and T.J. Syner. Freshmen Kevin Boyle stopped 26 shots.

The struggles continue for the Catamounts as they lost 4-1 to Merrimack on Wednesday. They are four points from Massachusetts who is ninth place.

This weeks Game’s

With only two games on the docket this weekend I will include them in this post.

Saturday Night’s Games

Union at Merrimack

This will be an intriguing game as the Union Dutchmen is a middle of the pack ECAC team with a 8-3-5. Merrimack has been a top five team in the country for most of the season. It will be a close game, but Merrimack will win in a close game.

St. Lawrence at Vermont

St. Lawrence is another middle of the pack team from the ECAC coming to Vermont. The Catamounts will have nearly two weeks to get ready for the game, but with all the time to prepare I will still take St. Lawrence in this match up.
