With Rick DiPietro done for the season, and former backup goalie Wade Dubielwicz claimed on re-entry waivers by Columbus, the goaltending options for the New York Islanders are becoming limited by the second. Right now, the two goaltenders expected to carry this team the rest of the way are Yann Danis (1-5-1; 3.19 GAA) and Peter Mannino (0-0-0 13.81 GAA) since Joey McDonald is going to be injured for the next month.
Now up in Ottawa, the emergence of rookie goaltender Brian Elliot has forced them into another goaltending controversy, albeit not a negative one, and that is what to do with the two goalies they currently have, both experienced NHLers. Out of Alex Auld and Martin Gerber, Auld has performed better and because of that, Gerber was put on waivers today by the Senators. After being sent down to their AHL affiliate in Binghamton last week, the club has decided to completely cut ties with him.
TSN also reported that, “Murray also stated that the Sens would sit down with Gerber and discuss his situation if he clears waivers without being claimed by another team. There has been speculation that the team would attempt to loan Gerber to a European team in order to alleviate his salary cap hit.”
So for the Islanders who desperately need goaltending help, this is a viable option for them, and a not too expensive one. So don’t be surprised if you see this move, or a move involving Gerber to happen in the next day or so.

Since when do the Islanders desperately need a goaltender? Yann Danis has played every game since MacDonald went down and has played great. 1 goal against by the Ducks, 2 goals allowed against Caps, 3 against Devils, 2 against Boston, and 2 against the Rangers. Those are all high quality teams and Danis seemed to handle them fine. Plus there is now a week off for the All-Star break and Joey MacDonald could be back soon right after it. The Islanders don’t need a goalie and this is not going to happen. Just my two cents.
I don’t see it happening – Gerber hasn’t shown anything in a long, long time that would make him an upgrade on who the Isles have.

Hi David and Bryan..
David, thanks a lot for the link. I completely agree with you on Gerber, he just doesn’t seem to have the mental staying power to be a solid number one. Unfortunately for the Isles the same can be said for Danis. While there is no doubt he is a very strong netminder it is yet to be seen if he is made of the same stock as a true number 1. There is a reason Montreal let him go. There just aren’t that many honest-to-goodness number 1s in the league, the are becoming quite the sought after commodity. New Jersey seems to have discovered one though. Isles should keep looking around. Do they have any interesting draftees?
Yeah, but I just can’t see the Islanders going out after a goaltender in a season that is hopeless anyway. It just wouldn’t make sense for them. If they were fighting for a playoff spot then sure, but they aren’t. They will finish last place this year and keep their strong draft pick instead of signing a goalie who could take that away from them.
