Columbus Blue Jackets

Blue Jackets Player Rankings: Part One – Offense

Columbus Player Rankings — Offense With the hockey season over for the Columbus Blue Jackets and their fans, what else is there to do other than watch the playoffs?  Keep replaying in your head all the “what if” scenarios of narrow losses by the Blue Jackets?  Yes, it can drive you insane!  So, what better remedy ...

THW Panel: Blue Jackets Face Big Questions This Offseason

Two months ago Blue Jackets fans were speculating whether Nate MacKinnon or Jonathan Drouin would look best in Union Blue. The late season surge ended that talk and have Jacket Backers entering the offseason with a most unfamiliar emotion: hope. Expectations have never been higher for the only NHL franchise without a playoff win after ending ...

Rising Blue Jackets Flush with Options, Picks in 2013 Draft

The Columbus Blue Jackets did everything in their power down the stretch to earn a trip to the playoffs. Unfortunately an abysmal first half turned out to be too much to overcome and the Jackets missed a chance to play for the cup by the slimmest of margins. Columbus’ thrilling run may have ended with ...

Blue Jackets Beat: Howson’s Revenge or Kings’ Folly?

It seemed so innocuous at the time . . . harmless really.  When former Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson proposed a tie-breaking revision that would make non-shootout wins the first tie-breaker for playoff determination, it was viewed as a sensible little move, appeasing the haters of the shoot-out.  Even in Columbus, it was viewed as a ...

Blue Jackets New Division Features Familiar Faces

The July blockbuster that sent Rick Nash to New York was viewed by most of the hockey world as an overwhelming victory for the Rangers. For Columbus, it appeared to be another disappointing chapter in what would turn out to be the final months of the Scott Howson saga. That was before Howson was replaced ...

NHL Playoffs: Is Columbus, Detroit, Dallas Or Phoenix Getting The Eighth Seed?

There is an enthralling logjam that has developed in the Western Conference for the last playoff spot in Lord Stanley’s annual gala.  With the sun-setting on this abbreviated season, only a handful of games remain yet the competition for the eighth seed is fierce.  The Columbus Blue Jackets temporarily sit atop a pile of four ...

Blue Jackets Beat: That’s Why They Play The Games

As the NHL configured the tightly compressed schedule in the aftermath of the latest lockout incarnation, the pundits almost universally decreed that the Stanley Cup Final would pit the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings.  While a smattering of votes for Chicago and Pittsburgh could be found, the consensus was so profound that an ...

Sergei Bobrovsky and “El Jackets” Awaken Columbus

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Sergei Bobrovsky have made a statement during the second half of the season with their perseverance, determination and a burning desire to win.  It has been a pleasant surprise for die-hard fans that have waited for so long to see their team play with pride, dignity and respect.  If that ...

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Philosophy

Don’t look now, but the laughing stock of the league in August has become the feel-good story of 2013.

The Columbus Blue Jackets, who sported a 29-46-7 record last season (good for last in the NHL) were belittled in the offseason for sporting “an AHL roster”. Their forward lines and defensive pairings lacked depth and star power. The goaltending tandem was deemed inexperienced and incredibly inconsistent. Most notably, now-former Columbus general manager Scott Howson was seen by everybody as a serious liability, with the potential to sign off on trades that could only be seen as laughable.
