The Columbus Blue Jackets lost not one, but two players on their checking line to injuries Friday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. With 6:17 remaining in the 2nd, Chimera was driven into the boards by the Wilds’ Eric Belanger. He did not get up from that hit, lying on the ice with blood around him and his arms and legs twitching. Newly aquired center Samuel Pahlsson within moments of the hit motioned for the paramedics to come onto the ice. The hushed crowd of over 18,000 gave Chimera a cheer as he raised both hands and gave them two thumbs up as he was taken off the ice on a stretcher. Overnight CT scans at Regions Hospital in St. Paul came back negative.
After the game, Freddy Modin was noticeably limping and coach Ken Hitchcock said of the right leg injury that it would be “weeks, not days” until Modin heals (Puck Rakers).
*Update* Modin will miss four to six weeks with a sprained right knee according to the Blue Jackets.
This is not what the Blue Jackets needed going into the season; two of their checking line wingers out with injury during a pre-season game. Who will take their places on the 3rd line? Raffi Torres on one side with Jake Voracek on the other would be my guess. Nikita Filatov just doesn’t have the size to play consistantly on the checking line. I see him moving up to the 2nd line with Antoine Vermette and RJ Umberger.
