As if the bad collapse at the end of the regular season was not enough, Phoenix Coyotes fans have had to also deal with the off ice problems of the franchise.
In a nut shell, Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes is bleeding money and can not sustain the team for much longer. A bad arena deal makes it tough for the Coyotes to make money off their games, not to mention the Desert Dogs are having trouble getting fans to come out to Glendale to games. It can not get any worse right?
Well it seems that it has. Over the last few days, various reports have stated that the National Hockey League has taken over all operations of the Coyotes while other reports have come out saying that this is false.
Either way, the Coyotes have been receiving money from the NHL to help pay bills and keep the team afloat. Negotiations to try and loosen the lease deal to attract buyers for the franchise have been ongoing but seem to have netted very little results thus far. The only way for the franchise to get out of the lease agreement, without having to pay the ridiculous out fee of around $700 million, is to declare bankruptcy. However, the NHL would rather jump off a cliff before that happens.
Calls to move the team by various outlets have Coyotes fans worried about losing their team and hockey in Phoenix.
The only way for the team to get out of this situation is by improving the on ice product and you can’t say the team has not tried. Various awards have been given to the franchise for marketing ploys such as Pierre the Snowman who is in many Coyote commercials. General Manager Don Maloney is working with a very limited budget being at the cap floor and has tried to ice a competitive team with many young players. Personally I feel the team could have been much better if they had a competent coach but that is for another time.
Obviously it takes time to move a franchise and work out the necessary logistics needed to do so, making next season safe. However, beyond that, things are uncertain in terms of the team’s future in Phoenix. All Coyote fans can do is sit, wait, and hope that something good happens to a franchise that has had almost no luck since they moved to Phoenix.
