Recently the Phoenix Coyotes have been hot having won 5 of their last 8 games. Coming off a 4-1 win over the Canucks in Vancouver, the Coyotes now head into Calgary to face the Flames who have been on a roll at home. They have won 7 straight at home and 11 of their last 13 and lead the Northwest Division with 58 points, good for 3rd in the Western Conference. They are coming off a victory against the San Jose Sharks which was the Sharks’ first regulation loss at home this season.

The Coyotes sit in 5th with 49 points, tied with the Canucks and Anaheim Ducks. They hold the 5th spot because of games in hand. While they have not been a great road team this year, with a record of 7-12-3, they will need to beat teams like Calgary if they hope to not only make the playoffs but make noise.

Coach Wayne Gretzky will have the same lineup in as on Thursday night with Ilya Bryzgalov in goal. Shane Doan leads the Coyotes in points with 44 and in goals with 18. Jarome Iginla leads the Flames in points and goals with 48 points and 18 goals.

The Coyotes will have to improve their power play if they want to succeed. It is stuck at 29th in the league with a 13.4% success rate. A big key to their victory in Vancouver was their ability to capitalize on the man advantage. This will be tough considering they are going up against the 4th best penalty kill in the NHL in Calgary.

Ilya Bryzgalov will have to repeat what he did in Vancouver if the Coyotes want a chance of winning tonight considering the offensive woes that the Coyotes have. They have already been shutout three times in the month of January. They will be going up against the goaltender with the most wins in the NHL in Miiikka Kiprusoff who has a 2.77 goals against average a a .905 save percentage. Bryzgalov has a 2.68 goals against with a .915 save percentage.

Following tonight’s contest, the Coyotes head to Edmonton to take on the Oilers and then return home on Tuesday January 20th to face off against the Red Wings before heading into the All Star Break.
