Although this season hasn’t been what a lot of Stars fans had hoped, Dallas has played a ton of incredibly entertaining hockey this year. The high-octane offense combined with below-average defending has made for some really exciting contests. In fact, if I were trying to get a friend to like the sport of hockey, I would probably just have them watch the Stars this year. There have been some blowouts, high-scoring close games, and a lot of late goals scored this season for the Stars. Let’s revisit the five best.
#5 – Dallas Stars Surprise the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-3
The Dallas Stars were fresh off a victory over the Washington Capitals the night before and really needed this win to stay alive in the playoff race at the time. It appeared as though they were tired early, as the Blackhawks had 9 shots in the first four minutes of the game, including tons of zone time and quality chances against Kari Lehtonen. Dallas persevered and scored the first two goals of the game, but the Blackhawks were able to answer. And despite the amount of goals scored in this game, both goaltenders made some must-see saves. #4 – Kings Rally Falls Short in Dallas
The Stars were soaring early in this game and built a 4-0 lead, including a mesmerizing breakaway pass from Kari Lehtonen to Tyler Seguin. However, when the Stars are on the ice, no lead for either team is safe. Los Angeles would score four of the next five goals but would ultimately come up short in this exciting contest at the American Airlines Center.
#3 – Stars Overcome Senators Fast Start
As I mentioned above, no leads are safe in a game that the Dallas Stars are involved in. Ottawa scored two quick goals to open the game and chase Kari Lehtonen from the goal. Hemsky was able to answer one of them with a slap-shot, but Ottawa would regain their two-goal lead just minutes later. The Dallas Stars decided to stage their rally in their best frame, the second. They rattled off four straight goals, including two from rookie-sensation John Klingberg, to take a 5-3 lead. The Senators were able to make it interesting with a goal in the third, but Anders Lindback shut the door and the Stars completed the comeback for the victory.
#2 – Stars Complete Comeback in a Wild Shootout in Edmonton
This game had everything you could possibly ask for. It had former Oilers seeking vengeance against their old club. It had a fight that involved Antoine Roussel. It had a backup goalie getting his first win in relief. Oh yeah, and it had a ton of goals. Taylor Hall opened the scoring but former Oilers Shawn Horcoff and Erik Cole answered to give the Stars a 2-1 lead in the first. At this point you may be thinking that the Stars are going to go about their business and lock down the game. Edmonton had other plans. They scored four straight in the second period to take a 5-2 lead and put a damper on the Stars successful road trip. However, with less than a minute left in the period, Jamie Benn was able to score on the powerplay and give the Stars some life heading into the third. I’ll let the video take it from there.
#1 – Stars Overcome No-Goal Call to Shock Pittsburgh
The Stars were down 2-1 late in the game and Jason Spezza thought he had his first goal as a Star. The goal was taken off the board when it was deemed that Tyler Seguin interfered with Marc-Andre Fleury. This did not sit well with the Stars and left the Penguins thinking they probably could have gotten at least a point if they just let the Spezza goal stand.
