The New York Islanders currently sit in last place in the entire NHL, I think it is pretty clear they will be sellers for the deadline. They have already made a significant move to add to their current stock pile of picks by trading Campoli and Comrie, to the Senators in return for McAmmond and San Jose’s first round pick.
The Islanders still have other guys, however, that teams may be looking to in the playoff race. The first name I want to mention is Brendan Witt.
Brendan Witt is a warrior. He is a physical defenseman that is not afraid to step it up. He has tremendous positioning and is consistently game in and game out our best defenseman. His stats might look awful to some of you, but look who he is playing for. I would be sad to see Witt leave the Island as he brings veteran leadership and is our most solid defenseman, but in a rebuilding stage it is necessary to do what you can for picks in the draft or young prospects. If you need a physical presence who is an outstanding Dman, well here is your man.
The second name on my list is Bill Guerin. He is 16-19-35 in 60 games played. While those numbers may not jump out at you, think twice. Bill Guerin was a scoring machine the first half of the year, however, Coach Scott Gordon made it clear that he was going to be giving the young guys more and more ice time. He kept true to his word. Bill Guerin’s ice time was decreased as the young players’ ice time increases which cause Bill Guerin stats to go down. If you give Guerin time on a playoff team, he will make it worth your while. He has decent skating with a very nice shot. He is a natural 25-30 goal scorer and for any team looking for goals, he would be a great addition.
Any takers?

The Islanders would be dumb if they traded Brendan Witt. He’s a complete defenseman and is under contract for 09-10. I think he stays put.
But looking at how the market is going to play out now with the possibility of Pronger being available, teams might push hard to try to get Witt and might be willing to make a nice trade in the Isles favor.
