Hartnell “bites” Letang: the Flyers are goons!

Some things never change. Penguins fans will always claim that the Flyers are a bunch of goons, and Flyers fans will always claim that the Penguins are a bunch of cheaters. There’s always little bit of truth as well as a bit of exaggeration from both sides no matter what the argument, but things took an even more interesting turn last Thursday during Philadelphia’s home loss to their in-state rival.

During a scrum late in the game it was reported that Scott Hartnell, one of the most hated players in the NHL, bit down pretty hard on defenseman Kris Letang’s finger.

The problem with this is that there is no video evidence to support the claim that there was ever a bite. The league explained this when they decided not to seek any kind of punishment for the Flyers’ power-forward.

Despite there being no evidence, almost no one believes that the bite never occurred. While Penguins fans claim that the attack was brutal and malicious, the majority of fans in the NHL realize that the bite, if it even occurred, was done in self-defense.

Don Cherry recently commented on the incident during a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast in which he asked the most important question of all; “What’s he supposed to do, kiss it?”

It’s very hard to believe that during a scrum Hartnell openly sought out Letang’s finger especially after he was the one pulling Letang away from Richards only to end up face-washed.

The things that get over exaggerated by NHL fans these days are reaching all time highs, and a rivalry, like the one between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, is one of the best sources for new material.

The truth of the matter is that the Penguins are just as dirty as the Flyers. In fact every team in the NHL has its little scrapes and dives and elbows and hits to the…um…unmentionables. Well, maybe that’s only in Pittsburgh, but the point is obvious. There is plenty to complain about in both colors every time two teams step onto the ice. None of this is ever going to go away, and the notion that Hartnell maliciously bit Letang’s finger is as short-sighted as claiming that the Flyers are the same team as the orange and black of the 1970′s.

Right now the Penguins lead the Eastern Conference with eight points (4-1-0) and are tied with the Calgary Flames for the lead in the NHL. The Flyers are the only team in the league with seven points (3-1-1). As both giants both compete for the Division title, Eastern title, and the Stanley Cup there’s only going to be more and more senseless accusations from both sides. Nothing will be resolved until one team becomes a non-factor in a couple of years (history designates that this will be the Penguins) or people come to their senses.

I’m sorry, if Gary Bettman had a top 2 selection from 2003-2006 he could’ve won a Stanley Cup by now too.

The Penguins don’t draft well, they draft obvious…

  • Corby Wilson

Yes the team that drafted Malkin, Crosby, Fluery, and Staal doesn’t draft well. Methinks you should reevaluate your sanity.

I’m a Habs fan – don’t get me started on crappy drafting….Kostitsyn was taken ahead of Richards & Getzlaf. Always clearer in hindsight, but that one hurts!

Well Bruce, after I wrote this there was an interview with Scott Hartnell released where he claims that during the incident Letang’s finger went inside his mouth, and he couldn’t breathe. He remembers struggling but doesn’t remember biting. Even if Hartnell bit Letang, I’m pretty sure that anyone being suffocated would do anything to get out of that situation. There should be no fault on his part.

And I completely agree with eliminating face-washing from the game. Hopefully Hartnell cools it down after experiencing this.

As for my comment about the Penguins, in retrospect I probably shouldn’t have included it, but teams that have shown to draft poorly normally don’t stay on top of the hockey world for very long, especially in the era of parody. As superstars like Malkin and Crosby take bigger contracts it will start to weigh heavily on ELC skaters to make immediate impacts. This causes problems with sending some young players into the fold before their ready. It happens to most organizations. Only teams that draft well escape the fate of prolonged slumps during the parody era. Pittsburgh is one of those teams that hasn’t shown they can draft capably. Granted, this could all change, but with their limited prospect pool and their current financial arrangements as fair as player contracts they will only go as far as Crosby and Malkin take them. It should be a long time before the pair are ever split, but eventually teams break up superstar pairings for a variety of reasons.

Chris – I forgot to ask about this statement:
    – history designates that this will be the Penguins

Can you clarify. I’ve been following the NHL day in and day out since about 1972 and it seems to me that every strong club looses power over time. Habs, Flyers, Islanders, even the likes of the Kings and Rangers have had strong clubs that turned to mush a year or two later. I don’t think either the Pens or the Flyers will be tops of the league for more than a couple years – do you just mean their downfall will be quicker? Stars get traded, prospects falter, coaches loose an edge, goaltenders loose confidence, injuries, retirements – there is just so much that can happen….

I’m not exactly pro-biting but if somebody decides they want to stick their mitts in my face you can believe I’d take a good sized chomp. I may be old fashioned and naive but I think a facewash is completely disrespectful and makes the players look like a bunch of children, grown men should not be sticking their hands in other men’s faces..
And the often forgotten rulebook offers some advice, called a Misconduct penalty:
(iii) Any player or goalkeeper who, after warning by the Referee, persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty.
