Greetings from Milwaukee!
First off, a big ‘thank you’ to Hockey Writers for bringing me on board as a guest reporter. I look forward to writing for the site, and hope everyone enjoys reading my articles as much as I enjoy writing them!
As I said before, I’m writing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin (not exactly the hockey capital of the world, I know). We don’t have an NHL team here in town, but we have seen our fair share of NHL’ers come through the city. The Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL) are the home town team here, and I’ve been lucky enough to work for them going on my third season as a broadcaster and reporter. For the past 2 seasons I’ve been a part of “Admirals Center Ice”, a weekly radio show on the local sports station as a host and as an NHL reporter, and I also provide the interviews from the locker room during the post game show after the radio broadcast. Besides working for the Admirals, I also give Milwaukee their NHL news with my blog ‘Hockey Gal’ on sportsbubbler.com.
Although we do see big name NHL’ers in the AHL from time to time during conditioning stints, or, in G Manny Legaces case last season, because they are in a slump, the best part of the AHL is seeing the NHL prospects. As the farm team for the NHL’s Nashville Predators, we have NHL hopefuls like Jonathon Blum and Cody Franson on the roster. At the end of last season, Nashville called up Admirals super star F Cal O’Reilly and he gave the Preds offense a much needed boost with 3 goals and 2 assists in 11 games. Needless to say his days in the AHL are numbered!
Prospects are hockey’s future, and not all hockey stars can play forever (although Chris Chelios might argue me on that), so I’ll keep you updated on the latest news about your favorite NHL prospects playing in the American Hockey League.
Only 2 more months til the puck drops on the 2009-2010 season! Hard to believe Pittsburgh hoisted the cup almost 2 months ago, isn’t it?
