Dallas Stars defender Trevor Daley (6) hugs goalie Marty Turco after the Stars' 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in an NHL hockey game, Thursday, March 12, 2009, in Dallas.

It has been almost a month since Dallas last won a game in Big D. To be exact, it has been 22 days since the fans in Dallas were able to leave the American Airlines Center cheerful.

Last night, Dallas met the Carolina Hurricanes, as their push to grab one of the final playoffs spots in the Western Conference.

As with every game down this home stretch to the playoffs, the Stars saw this as a must win game.

The difference with this one, Dallas would be even more shorthanded than they had been all year, and they hadn’t won a home game in their past 6 attempts.

The way the game began was exactly how Dallas hoped it wouldn’t. Tuomo Ruutu received a two-minute penalty for tripping, and the Canes subsequently took their penalty kill, and scored a shorthanded goal against Dallas’s fledgling power play unit.

Dallas would end the period only giving up that one goal, but momentum was definitely siding with their opposition.

Apparently, Dave Tippett gave a wonderful speech during that first intermission that lit the fire under the Stars’ backsides, because 1:01 into the second, the Stars had tied the game.

It didn’t end there.

The two new Stars, Steve Begin and Brendan Morrison, finally notched their first goals since joining the team.

Carolina notched one goal on the power play in the third, but Dallas’s defense made sure that was all.

With Dallas’s win, they have taken control of the 8th and final playoff spot… For now.

With 14 games remaining in Dallas’s regular season, every win counts. If they’re hungry to make they playoffs, they’ll need to go on a strong streak to end the season, and with the youth on the team, it is possible to do so.
