The New York Islanders were searching for their first win of the New Year, but once again came up short. The best thing that came out of this game was the honoring of Bill Guerin and Doug Weight before the game even started.
Bill Guerin was honored for scoring his 400th goal earlier this year. He was presented with a framed NYI Jersey with the number 400. Also, he received a framed puck, score sheet, and picture from that game.
Doug Weight, also, reached a milestone this year as he assisted on a goal by Richard Park for his 1000th career point. He received the framed jersey with the number 1000 on it along with the puck, score sheet, and picture. However, he was, also, presented with an official milestone NHL silver stick.
It was a very nice moment for the players from the organization as the players and their families were on the ice to enjoy the experience.
The Islanders then began their game infront of a packed house at Nassau Coliseum and things just seemed all downhill from there.
6:06 into the first period, Yann Danis tried to do to much with the puck and held onto it too long behind the net where Zach Parise came and stole the puck, he attempted a shot which turned into a pass right to Travis Zajac who put the puck in the open net while shorthanded.
The second period opened up with a bang as the Devils scored 57 seconds in on a shot from Zach Parise on the power play.
Just about 4 minutes later David Clarkson joined in the fun and scored to give the Devils a 3-0 lead.
The Islanders finally put themselves on the board with a rebound goal by Blake Comeau off a shot, initially from Radek Martinek. The score was then 3-1 and that is how the game would finish with the Devils on top. The Islanders have now lost 7 straight and are still looking for their first win of 2009.
