In a game where the big story was, unfortunately, Claude Lemieux’s “return” to Joe Louis Arena (he was, incidentally, a non-factor) the Detroit Red Wings dominated the San Jose Sharks in almost every aspect and ended the game on top 4-1.
The team with the best power play in the league was held to a paltry 1-for-7 on the man advantage, and when they did get shots through to the net Ty Conklin was there to put the kibosh on them. During one exchange in front of Detroit’s net Conklin found himself out of position and, stretching and sliding to the other post, literally robbed Joe Pavelski with his glove hand.
And then there were the goals.
Two of them came from an established superstar, and another from a superstar-in-the-making. Take a gander.

Detroit started the scoring in the first period when Marian Hossa notched his team-leading 34th of the season. Hossa would later leave the game after taking an elbow to the head mid-way through the second period by the Sharks’ Douglas Murray and wouldn’t return, but according to Wings head coach Mike Babcock it was only for “precautionary reasons.”
Notes:
- San Jose’s Joe Thornton, who was ranked third in the NHL in assists going into last night’s game, was held scoreless. He finished with a -1, lost 12 of 16 face-offs and took two penalties in 18:45 of ice time.
- Ty Conklin made 31 saves for Detroit and won his 12th straight home start.
- Claude Lemieux played a total of 5:38.

Z’s goals were both special. Conklin came to play. Pepe hasn’t been a factor yet (although also not a liability), and I am guessing we will give up on that experiment once Goc and/or Mitchell come back. I was not happy with anyone’s performance:

MJ – Interlinking between THW stories – great comment. This was one of my big hopes when starting the site. Two viewpoints on the same game. Thanks for taking the time to comment and letting our readers now that now that we have nearly all of our writers in place they will often see 2 articles on the same game.
Any writers reading this – feel free to do the same whenever that you see a post on the same game. Once the playoffs get going we will do more intentional linking of posts (other than the system generated Related Posts).
Thanks. And now I’m just trying to catch up to Paul on the tag heap. I figure the Sharks will be playing about two weeks longer than the Wings, so that’ll help me…LOL!
Hey now, since when is this is a popularity contest?
Let’s put it this way: if my team with all of their talent was as competitive as I am, we’d set a record for wins in a season. I may be more competitive than Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Josh Beckett, Gordie Howe, and Jerry Rice…
Nothing wrong with a little competition. Keeps things interesting.
