The Los Angeles Kings joined the NHL as part of the league’s 1967 Expansion and were owned by Jack Kent Cooke, who also owned the LA Lakers. The Kings didn’t find consistent success until the 1970s and early 1980s when they were led by the Triple Crown Line, one of the most successful lines in NHL history. In 1988, the Kings sent shockwaves throughout the sports world when they traded for Wayne Gretzky, which eventually led to the team’s first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1993 and helped hockey establish roots in California. Gretzky was eventually traded to the Blues in 1996, which set the franchise back. However, in the 2010s, they rebounded and won Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014.

In 2022 and 2023, the Kings took Game 1 in their previous opening-round matchups with the Oilers. However, this year, the script has been flipped, as Hyman…

Oilers Lack Momentum Going Into Series Against Kings

Through the first two days of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the home team has won every game. According to Sportsnet Stats, this is postseason history that the home team has gone unbeaten in the first six Game 1s played in the opening round of the NHL Playoffs. The Edmonton Oilers certainly hope that trend continues when they start their first round best-of-seven series against the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Place tonight (April 22), because Edmonton is also facing another trend that is much less in its favour: the Oilers have the worst win percentage in Game 1 among…
