The Toronto Marlies saw their three game win streak come to and end Saturday as they were defeated 4-1 by the North Division leading Rochester Americans.
The Americans are off to their best start since 1996, and show no signs of letting up.
Toronto’s AHL franchise opened the scoring two minutes into the first period with Todd Perry’s first of the season. Unfortunately the lead only lasted six minutes as the Amerk’s Hartlieb puts one past MacDonald on a two-on-one break.
The middle frame saw Duco and Brine tally goals 16 seconds apart to put this one away. The fourth and final marker came in the third as Brine attempted to clear the puck, only to have it land in the empty Marlies net.
The loss brought an end to Mike Zigomanis’ point streak. The Marlies veteran centre had recorded a point in every game since joining the team previous to the tilt against the Americans.
Phil Oreskovic, a Marlies defenseman who had seen time as a forward while many of his teammates were out with the flu, was the lone plus player for the Toronto team finishing the game +1.
The game’s third star Salak, made 24 saves for the Americans while the significantly busier MacDonald stopped 27.
The Marlies spend some time in the community this week as they prepare for their next two games against the Moose, last years North Division leaders. Friday will mark the first game between these two teams since Manitoba eliminated Toronto from the Calder Cup playoffs in May. Puck drop is 8:30pm EST, visit http://www.torontomarlies.com to listen to John Bartlett’s live game coverage.
