Last night’s truculence gave birth to tonight’s testosterone. The 5-3 Marlies loss to the Abbotsford Heat came amidst an apparent attempt to squash their seaon’s single game penalty minute record set the night before.

The first period alone saw 118 penalty minutes, five fights and four players ejected from the game. Unfortunately all the testosterone on the Marlies bench could not slow the Abbotsford scoring machine. The Marlies headed to the dressing room behind 2-1 and outrageously outshot 24-6.

Jiri Tlusty opened the scoring with his first shorthanded goal of the season, and his fifth goal in six games. Jiri ended the back-to-back set against Abbotsford with 2 goals, 2 assists, 6 shots and 2 penalty minutes.

abbotsfordThrough the middle frame Heat goaltender David Shantz faced 12 shots, most of which were during the three times his team was shorthanded. Shantz stopped them all with the same calm demeanor he displayed last year with Rochester that earned him an impressive 0.923 save percentage.

Tyler Bozak scored his first AHL goal of the season on the powerplay during the third period. Unfortunately his efforts were for not as Abbotsford scored 1:06 later after Tlusty took a needless holding penalty.

Adam Munro made 35 saves in his third start with the Marlies this season. Goaltender Beau Eriksson, signed to a professional try-out contract from the Marlies ECHL affiliate Reading Royals, has yet to take the ice for the Baby Buds.

The game had a total of 136 penalty minutes divided between 33 infractions. Dale Mitchell scores his second goal in as many games, and Mike Zigomanis gets two more assists to make it four points in his first two games.

The loss causes the Marlies to fall to sixth place in the North division.

The Marlies are off until Saturday when they face the Red Wings’ affiliate Griffins in Grand Rapids for their home-opening weekend, game time is 7:00pm EST. Follow the action at http://www.torontomarlies.com .
