Carey Price - MontrealSo much for a large celebration during the Montreal Canadiens Centennial season.

With the Canadiens only one point up on the ninth place Florida Panthers, who have not made the playoffs themselves since the beginning of the decade, more and more on and off-ice distractions continue to haunt the 24-time Stanley Cup franchise.

With the return of Sergei Kostitsyn and the farming of Max Pacioretty, GM Bob Gainey is hoping that Kostitsyn can add some spark to the lineup as Pacioretty has not shown that he has what it takes to stay long term right off the bat as a rookie.

Not only that, but is Gainey’s job in trouble?  Rumours have abounded to the fact that Gainey may have made a rash decision since firing Guy Carbonneau at the beginning of March.

With only one win as the Canadiens bench boss, the Canadiens season is unraveling quickly.

An embarrassing 5-2 loss on Saturday night to their archrivals from Toronto has shown that the bottom of the Canadiens barrel is farther down still than it was first thought to be.

Add to that Alex Kovalev’s so-so season, injuries to top players such as Alex Tanguay, and inconsistent goaltending from both netminders and the Canadiens roller coaster season seems to be stuck in a constant downhill motion.

Just recently, Canadiens owner George Gillette has been weighing his financial options, including the Liverpool soccer team and the Gillette Evernham racing team, and the Canadiens may even be up for sale.

With so much circling around the Canadiens, it has all reached a fever pitch in the history of the Canadiens.

Never since the Richard Riot has there been so much controversy surrounding the Canadiens franchise.

A centennial season where players are not consistent, the owner may sell the team, the coach is fired and nothing better happens, and its all occurring in the teams 100th seaeson.

Wow, that’s one heck of a storyline.

But the bottom of the barrel is still far down.

Or is it?

  1. potvin .... says:

just watch, they’ll magically have a dream season. they’ll get the 8th seed, rally in the playoffs, win every playoff series in 7 games, including an eastern conference final matchup with the boston bruins, where montreal wins in quadruple overtime in game 7, and then goes on to face detroit in the final, where in game 7, montreal wins off of a OT penalty shot. just watch. it’s going to happen.
