NWHL Keeps Cap, Changes Roster Size

On April 6th, the NWHL announced a change to the roster size for the 2016-17 season. The salary cap for each team will stay the same at $270,000. Under this new model the average salary per play will be $15,882 from $15,000, an $882 increase.

We’re continuously striving to make appropriate changes to ensure we’re doing what’s best for our players and the league. We believe this change in roster size and number of practice players will raise the overall level of competition throughout the league.

During the 2015-16 season each team had an 18-player roster, 15 skaters and 3 goalies. They also had 4 practice players who would practice with the team and fill in on occasion. Although many practice players were game changers for their squad they were not paid.

This all changes during the 2016-17 season.

Practice players played a huge role in the success of all four teams last season. We’re excited to offer that opportunity to more players in 2016-17.
