There are still 28 games remaining on the Florida Panthers schedule, but the Panthers are already making headlines for next season.  According to George Richards of the Miami Herald, the Florida Panthers will start the 2009-2010 NHL season in Helsinki, Finland.  His full story can be read here.

The Panthers will play the Chicago Blackhawks in Harwall Arena in Helsinki.  The other NHL teams making the trip to Europe are reported to be the Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues, who will meet up in Stockholm, Sweden.  Earlier this season, the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Ottawa Senators opened the 2008-2009 season in Europe. It was pretty cool seeing the NHL product overseas and going up against some elite European teams. While the Panthers probably don’t have the international following some other teams might, it will still be nice to see the Cats get some early season attention next year.

For now, the Panthers attention is fully focused on the playoff race.  Florida is 6-2-0 since the All-Star Break, 11-3-3 since the new year, and find themselves just 3 points behind the 4th place team in the east.  However, they are also only 3 points ahead of the 9th seed Hurricanes.  The Cats kick off a vital 5 game homestand, all against teams above them in the standings.  Pete DeBoer has made it well known he is looking to catch teams ahead of them, and not just stay ahead of the teams behind.  He and his team will get a chance to climb to within 1 point of the 5th seed, as the New York Rangers visit the Bank Atlantic Center tonight.
