One of the highlights of Detroit’s embarrassing loss to the Islanders last night was this game-saving grab by former Michigander Joey MacDonald. Granted, the score was 0-0 at the time, but I have to think that if the Wings score there against a team as young as the Islanders the end result would have been vastly different. You know, the whole “crushing their spirit” thing.
Anyway, I’ve seen some stellar puck knocking acumen from various goalies this season, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that this is the Save of the Year. Why? Glad you asked.
Not only did MacDonald turn Mikael Samuelsson into a bobblehead with that save but the deft manner in which he did it left absolutely no doubt if the puck crossed the line. Take a look at the video, complete with jig-inspiring circus music, and see for yourself:
Most of the time when a goalie makes a save like that the refs have to consult the video replay in order to determine if the force of the shot carried the goalie’s glove over the line, hence turning a great save into a save that could have been. Not here my friends. MacDonald turned a gaping net and what appeared to be a sure goal into a rafter inspection by Samuelsson and allowed his team to compete against Detroit instead of simply skate with them.
Save of the Year? I’ve yet to see one better.
