Sean Avery, the NHL’s bad boy, is set to return to the ice this week. However, it will be on the smaller stage, the AHL. The Dallas Stars assigned Avery to play for the Hartford Wolfpack yesterday, which is a New York Rangers affiliate. The reason Avery is assigned with the Rangers affiliate, is that the Stars could have sent him to any AHL franchise due to the fact that they have no direct affiliate. They chose New York.
Avery, who is 28, signed a four year deal worth close to $16 million this offseason with the Stars, but after the comments he had made back in December regarding another player and his relationship with Avery’s ex love interest, the Stars have been looking for a way to get rid of him.
To make it back to the NHL the Dallas Stars would have to recall Avery, and he would then have to pass through re-entry waivers. If a team was to claim him at that point they would be responsible for half of his contract.
The Rangers are the obvious choice as Avery spent two season in New York where he quickly had become a fan favorite. Avery had thanked the Rangers president, for allowing him the chance to make a return into the NHL.
The Wolfpack have already stated he will not appear in their next game, this Wednesday.
