Cue the creepy theme music…..because a surreal feeling has taken over me. After last night’s win in OT against the Detroit Red Wings, the Phoenix Coyotes now find themselves at the top of the Pacific division thanks to a 4 game winning streak. And at 6 and 2 they are just behind the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference..whoa. Pinch me. It isn’t the win against the Red Wings that is shocking however, we’ve done that before. So, here’s what is:
1) It’s the first time in 3 years that the Coyotes have seen such a streak.
2) We haven’t seen our standings so high since the plague that was the all star break last season
3) The Colorado Avalanche are 1st in the Western Conference, enough said
4) And still with a 4 game winning streak we can’t seem to eek out more than a measly 12,000 fans to fill the arena (and who knows how many of those traitors were Red Wing fans)
I keep expecting Rod Serling to pop out to deliver the “kicker” of an ending. Just hold your horses Rod, because I am digging this feeling. Now when co-workers pass my Yotes memorabilia infested desk, it’s not with the usual scorn…its “How about your Coyotes, Sharon?” You are darn skippy my Coyotes! It was MY faith, MY neverending support, MY constant vigilance in defending my team to the ground that surely has this conclusion more Disney than dark.
All right, enough of my delusions of grandeur. It’s more like our red hot goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, the new coaching regime of Dave Tippett and quite frankly some good old fashioned teamwork or “pack mentality” as the organization is calling it, that has put the boys in such an enviable position.
So, as the Coyotes take on our next opponent the LA Kings (currently 2nd in the Pacific Division) I am envisioning good old Rod wearing Coyote red because Phoenix is most definitely in the “Zone”.
