The Dallas Stars reversed an unusual trend at home Wednesday night and came away with a come from behind, 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime.
Continuing their winning ways, the Stars have earned points in 10 of the teams first 12 games in this young season. The win evened their home record to 2-2-1 but still left them in fourth place in the Pacific division.
Wednesday night wasn’t exactly complete effort though, as for nearly 19 minutes, including the last 15 of the first period, the team was held shotless. Despite the shot discrepency they were still able to open the scoring at the 15;13 mark of the second when Brad Richards banked one in from below the red line for his first of two on the night.
The 1-0 lead however, wouldn’t last long as Nikolai Kulemin knotted the game with his first of two on the evening.
The see-saw battle continued until late in the third when Mike Ribeiro deflected home a shot from Jamie Benn from inside the blue line, with just under 3 minutes remaining in regulation.
Moments earlier the Stars got away with a bad change that could have been whistled for too many men, but fortunately play continued much to the chagrin of the Leafs bench.
Despite the Leafs 1-7-2 record, they gave the Stars all they could handle with their Swedish rookie, Jonas Gustavsson, nicknamed the “Monster,” in net and playing like one.
Conversely, it wasn’t Marty Turco’s best effort of the season in spite of the win.
Which begs the question, do good teams find ways to win even when they don’t play their best? And is this 2009 version of the Stars that good?
Certainly the coaching staff will look for a better effort Friday night when another struggling team visits the AAC, the Florida Panthers.
