A Silver Linings Playbook For Ottawa Senators Fans

Do a quick Internet search for the Oscar-nominated film Silver Linings Playbook, and this phrase will pop up as a key descriptor: Life doesn’t always go according to plan. And if there’s one NHL team that can attest to the harsh reality of that statement, it’s the 2013 Ottawa Senators. Only in one’s worst nightmares could ...

2013 NHL Mock Draft: The Next Ones Winter Edition

This is the first edition of THW’s 2013 NHL Mock Draft – The Next Ones Winter Edition. Every year it seems I contemplate whether or not to go through the intriguing yet dubious task of putting together a mock draft. We all know how fascinating it is to go through the process of formulating which team ...

NHL Draft: Justin Bailey’s Carving A Unique Path

Justin Bailey grew up with professional athletes all around him. As he’s preparing to embark on his own pro career, being around talent is nothing new.

The difference: this time, the talent is his.

“Growing up in Buffalo, we (his family) lived in the same condo as Matthew Barnaby, Michael Peca and Rob Ray,” Bailey said. “Barnaby helped me along the way with a lot of decision-making.”

Being raised in the same building as NHLers clearly influenced the young Kitchener Rangers forward. But they weren’t the only pros who had an impact on Bailey when he was younger.

Calder Trophy: Top 10 Candidates

About one-third into the shortened NHL season, enough games have been played to have a good idea who the leading candidates are for the top rookie in the NHL. This season, as opposed to recent years, there is no clear-cut candidate to win the Calder Trophy, but rather a plethora of worthy candidates to consider ...

Los Angeles Kings at the Quarter Mark

The last team to win a game in 2012 was also the last team to reach the 12 game mark in the NHL this season. Unfortunately for the Los Angeles Kings, the first quarter of their season has been a far cry from their magical Stanley Cup run last spring. Through 12 games, the Kings ...

San Jose’s 2012-13 Refrain: Here’s to You, Mr. Robinson

No doubt thoroughly disgusted with his team’s anemic penalty killing statistics over the past two season, Sharks’ General Manager Doug Wilson has tried adding defensive size, strength and speed, along with speedy and/or big two-way forwards to improve their special teams. Schemes have been tweaked and adjusted. In short, he’s tried everything but turning the ...

Flames Training Camp Preview Part 1 of 3: The Fresh Faces

While the CBA negotiations between the NHL and the NHLPA seemingly continue to waltz the line of the second NHL lockout in just seven years, optimistic fans are opting to focus on the conclusion of August which always brings the start of rookie and NHL training camps in September. For the Calgary Flames, several players ...

Would the Canadiens Benefit from an NHL Lockout?

Hockey fans everywhere have been dreading a work stoppage since the L.A. Kings hoisted the Cup in June. The last time the league and the NHLPA negotiated a new CBA it was the fans that paid the biggest price, we were left without professional hockey in North America for the entire 2004-2005 season. It ...
