On Tuesday night, the New Jersey Devils picked up right where they left off before the All Star break…on fire. They stormed into Scotiabank Place, and appeared to have no post All-Star break hangover.
It didn’t take the Devils long to get on the board, as Patrik Elias buried the puck in the back of the net at 4:54 of the 1st period, off a beautiful pass from Brian Gionta. The goal was his 21st of the season.
Midway through the 2nd period, Ottawa tied the game at one thanks to Alexandre Picard’s power play goal. However, that would be all the Ottawa scoring for the night.
Jaime Langenbrunner put the Devils back on top four minutes later, with his ninth goal of the season. He would also go on to score another goal, just 19 seconds into the third period. This goal gave the Devils a commanding 3-1 lead in the third.
Brendan Shannahanthen added his second goal in three games to make the score 4-1. The score would remain and the Devils went on to defeat the Ottawa Senators 4-1.
Tuesday night’s win was the New Jersey Devils sixth win in a row, which is their season high for consecutive games won.
The biggest news to come out of this game was the fact that Scott Clemmensen won his 20th game of the season. A feat which no one ever thought he would accomplish.
Before this season Clemmensen’s career high for wins in a season was 3. He told the media after the game “It feels good. Why stop at 20? There’s more to go and you take it one game at a time and hopefully 20 can become 21, and then 22, 23, and so on, so forth.” With the way Clemmensen has played all season there is no doubt that he will win many more games before Marty Brodeur returns in March.
Tonight is gut-check time for the New Jersey Devils. They will be playing the first place Boston Bruins at Boston, in one of their biggest tests this season. It is a chance for the New Jersey Devils to prove that they are one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference.
Expect tonight’s game to be very low scoring affair. Both teams are very good defensively and it’s going to come down to who makes the most of their scoring opportunities. The Devils will look to extend their win streak to 7, with a win over the best team in the Eastern Conference.
Notes:
Travis Zajac had two assists Tuesday night and now has 10 points in his last 8 games.
Zach Parise extended his point streak to four games with an assist in the win against Ottawa.
