I feel like the two-day Christmas break could not have come at a better time for your Toronto Maple Leafs.
At a point last week they found themselves in striking distance, but their inconsistency caught up to them and they have lost ground in the chase.
I find it incredible that they can look so good against a team like the Boston Bruins—a team that had owned them prior to the last game they played in which they won 2-0, giving Jonas Gustavsson his first career shutout—and look completely and utterly lost against the New York Islanders.
Thankfully for the team, they managed to squeak out a point while playing the Buffalo Sabres, another team which they had no business coming close to beating (considering they can’t contend with Long Island, that is), on Saturday night.
Maybe Leaf fans should ask for some form of consistency from their team this Christmas.
Sadly, I don’t think the Stanley Cup is coming this year—not with all the far-superior teams in the NHL. Can you imagine your Leafs beating a team like the San Jose Sharks in a seven-game series? I didn’t think so.
The most realistic thing to ask for is for your team to squeak into the playoffs and hopefully pull off an upset in the first round. Expectations will have been exceeded and everyone will be happy.
Don’t worry, as a Habs fan, I’m hoping for the exact same thing (from my team, not yours)!
For that to come to fruition, the Leafs must defeat the teams that they are meant to beat. The losing skids must stop.
Also, they may try to pace themselves while playing in games. I’ve never seen a team win by so many goals in one game, and then lose by so many on the next night.
In my opinion, Christmas may have come early for Leafs fans. The night that Phil Kessel debuted, the team got a whole other scoring option. He’s not going to score all the Leafs’ goals, but his threat certainly allows Nik Hagman to skate more freely. It also gives Tomas Kaberle another option on the power-play. Without Kess, I think the Blue and White would still be bottom-feeding along with the Carolina Hurricanes.
I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas. I hope the New Year brings you more happiness and less frustration while watching your team.
That being said, I hope that the Montreal Canadiens beat the Toronto Maple Leafs back into 2008 on Boxing Day!
Happy Holidays!
