Another game in the books, another loss for the Colorado Avalanche. Last night the Avalanche blew a lead with 1:46 to play and ended up losing in a shootout. Nick Schultz scored just his 2nd goal on the season and with that, ended any hopes of a playoff run in Colorado.
Technically, the Avs are still alive but with 11 games to play, and sitting 11 points out of the 8 seed, this disappointing season has come to an end. Nick Schultz hadn’t scored a goal this calendar year but his late 3rd period tally put any hopes of a late playoff push to rest. As has been the theme this year, the Colorado Avalanche looked flat in the first half of the game. They were fortunate to be tied 1-1 at the midway point and actually headed into the 2nd intermission with a 2-1 lead thanks to this season’s one bright spot, Ryan Smyth.
The 3rd period was pretty much dominated by Minnesota. They put 9 shots on Peter Budaj and Colorado could only counter with 4. Ben Guite took his second minor penalty at the 12 minute mark and the Avs penalty kill held off the Wild attack for 2 minutes. It looked like Colorado would hold on for the victory. But, with just 106 seconds to play, Schultzie ripped a slapper from the left circle and cleanly beat Peter Budaj. The home crowd got behind the Wild from there and it was clear that Minnesota would win in extra time, which they eventually did.
Another tough loss, another reason to head to the driving range in Denver.
