By Craig Phelps
St. Louis, Mo- The St. Louis Blues have signed center Kyle Wellwood to a one year deal, according to our friends at TSN.
The former member of the Toronto Maple Leafs and and Vancouver Canucks has played in 338 games in the NHL, scoring 63 goals and 97 assist for 160 points over his career. Welwood is plus two over his NHL tenure that spans five seasons (not including 7:56 minutes of ice time during one game of the 2003-2004 season).
The Ontario native’s best season came in 2005-2006 during his first true NHL season. Wellwood posted career marks with 81 games played, 45 points, 34 assist, 117 shots, and 14 penalty minutes.
Wellwood’s worst season was his last year with the Toronto Maple Leafs. During the 2007-2008 season. He hit career lows with 8 goals, 21 points, 3 even strength goals, 57 shots, minus 12, and an average of 12:39 minutes on ice per game.
The 5-foot-10-inch, 181 pound skater appeared in the 2009 and 2010 playoffs with the Vancouver Canucks. In 22 playoffs games over the 2 seasons, Wellwood put up 3 goals, 10 assist, 13 points, and averaged 15:26 minutes per game. He had a goal and an assist in the Canucks four game sweep over the Blues during the 2009 playoffs.
Wellwood’s NHL teams are 18-9 when he has two or more points in a game. He has scored two or more goals in four games over his career. He also has two or more assist in eleven games and his teams are 9-2 when he has multiple helpers. His career high in assist came in a 6-0 Toronto Maple Leafs victory over the Ottawa Senators where he was credited with four assist.
Wellwood has been plus two on the ice ten different times in the NHL, his teams are 8-2 in those games.
The Atlant Mytyshchi had signed the 27 year old skater to play with them in the Kontinental Hockey League this season. Wellwood will have to clear waivers before he is able to put on a Blues uniform. The Blues had signed forward Marek Svatos earlier this season, but the Nashville Predators picked him up off waivers.
*Updated 1/11/2001 11:13pm CST- Blues General Manager, Doug Armstrong, told the St. Louis Post Dispatch earlier today that Kyle Wellwood has not signed a deal with the Blues. Armstrong did not deny that they have interest in Wellwood and said they would not be signing anybody “today.”
