Just stopping by with some quick notes before tonight’s game against the Red Wings…
For those at the Joe Louis Arena hoping to see a battle of Henriks: Sorry, you’ll have to wait until the Canucks come to town to see Henrik Sedin battle your Henrik Zetterberg. It looks like Martin Biron will once again start in place of Henrik Lundqvist for the Rangers tonight. Lundqvist, who has struggled since returning from the All-Star Game, will miss his second consecutive game since being yanked from last Thursday’s 3-2 loss to New Jersey.
Lundqvist allowed three goals on 12 shots in the loss to the Devils before Biron took over the crease in relief of the Garden’s King.
Since returning from Raleigh, Lundqvist (0-2-1) has allowed three or more goals in his last three games. Biron allowed only allowed one goal in the Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Montreal on Saturday afternoon and according to Jim Cerny of www.newyorkrangers.com, Tortorella feels the extra time off will only help Lundqvist re-find his game.
Besides Biron, sophomore defensemen Michael Del Zotto will also skate at the Joe tonight. Del Zotto, who was recalled when Dan Girardi went down with a rib injury before the All-Star break, is getting a real close look from the coaching staff to decide whether or not he’s going to stay in lineup, or return to the Connecticut Whale of the AHL. Steve Eminger will once again sit while Del Zotto tries to prove to the Rangers that he’s learned from his stint in the AHL earlier in the season.
It appears as if the Rangers will roll the same grouping of lines as they did in Montreal–even though they were shut out…
The Blueshirts have only won three of their previous 10 games, with two of which coming via shootout. With the trade deadline looming, and the Rangers consistently struggling to find offense, it will be interesting to see if a string of losses will provoke GM Glen Sather to make a move for a puck-moving defensemen or top-notch center–two areas that have plagued the Rangers for what seems to be an eternity.
