The Calgary Flames continued to quietly piece together Brent Sutter’s new coaching staff, announcing this week that veteran coach Craig Hartsburg has joined the team as associate coach.
Hartsburg, 51, joins the Flames after a two-season stint with the Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips. He boasts a lengthy playing and coaching resume that dates back to his years as a defenseman with the WHA’s Birmingham Bulls and the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars. He followed up his playing days with coaching jobs in Philadelphia, Guelph (OHL), Chicago, Anaheim, Sault Saint Marie (OHL) and Ottawa.
A very astute hockey man, Hartsburg brings with him experience and familiarity with many of the Flames young players and prospects due to his experience in both the Ontario and Western Hockey Leagues. His time as head coach in Chicago saw him oversee current Flames bench boss Brent Sutter during his last three years as an active player.
Hartsburg joins a coaching staff that includes the aforementioned Brent Sutter, assistant coach Dave Lowry and incoming senior video analyst Jamie Pringle, formerly of the Florida Panthers.
