NHL Playoff Coverage
Detroit Red Wings 4 San Jose Sharks 3 Game 5; Sharks lead series 3-2
Facing playoff elimination for the second straight game the Red Wings fought off the Sharks to play another day (Tomorrow in fact – in Detroit).
Detroit would start off the game with two penalties as Brad Stuart would be called for boarding just over five minutes into the game while captain Nicklas Lidstrom would sit for tripping just past the 12 minute mark.
The first goal would come from San Jose’s Devin Setoguchi after he tipped in a shot from Dan Boyle. Just seconds afterward Sharks captain Joe Thornton would be called for unsportsmanlike conduct for a hit and dive he put on Detroit’s Johan Franzen. Franzen would also sit for two minutes for retaliating and slashing Thronton:
The game would head to intermission with the Sharks up by one and would stay that way until 15:32 of the second when Joe Pavelski woul give San Jose the 2-0 lead over Detroit. Less than a minute later Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall would net a wrist shot past Antti Niemi to bring the game within one.
Kronwall would go from scoring the goal to flattening Ryane Clowe along the boards:
Scoring early in the third – and by early we are talking a mere 54 seconds into the final period it would be Logan Couture with a backhanded shot past Jimmy Howard to give the Sharks another two goal lead over the Red Wings.
Then the Red Wings would do what everyone says is a myth and flip the playoff switch.
Red Wing defender Jonathan Ericsson would net his first of the post season with a wrist shot off of a set up from Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk to bring the game within one for Detroit.
Less than two minutes after the Ericsson goal it would be Danny Cleary with a slap shot off of a pass from Kronwall to tie the game.
Then with just over six minutes left in the game it would be Pavel Datsyuk setting up Nicklas Lidstrom that would be tipped-in by Tomas Holmstrom for the game winning goal.
The series extends to game six; and hockey comes back to hockeytown once more.
