Mere hours before the puck is set to drop in Detroit as the Red Wings take on the Phoenix Coyotes and the news has broken: Jimmy Howard is injured.
Last years Calder finalist goaltender Jimmy Howard is not going to be playing tonight. As to the extent of the injury I do not know (but I will update when I get that information to check back).
Instead of Howard in net tonight it will be veteran, and three time Stanley Cup winner, Chris Osgood. On the bench will be 30 year old journeyman goaltender Joey MacDonald who was recalled from the Red Wings AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.
You may remember MacDonald from last seasons Red Wings game against the Islanders the score was 6-0 with MacDonald getting the shutout. So far this season MacDonald has a 2-1-1 record with the Griffins with a .929 save percentage and 1.72 GAA.
According to Red Wings Media Relations Manager Todd Beam the Red Wings had to move Kris Draper to long-term injured reserve and place Brian Rafalski on short-term injured reserve to make room for MacDonald.
UPDATE: According to the Free Press’ Helene St. James Jimmy Howard started having back spasms after the morning skate and the team removed him from the line up as a precaution.
