Steve Mason will be forced into a back-to-back situation Saturday night.
The Philadelphia Flyers’ goaltender made 18 saves in his team’s 31- victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning Friday night, but due to tandem partner Michal Neuvirth contracting a stomach virus, Mason will again see the pipes tonight as the Flyers battle the Florida Panthers.
The team recalled AHL All-Star goalie Anthony Stolarz in an emergency situation. Teams are only allowed four player recalls after the NHL trade deadline and the Flyers have already used one on Nick Cousins. However, since this is an emergency call-up, this will not count as their second.
With Mason on a 4-0-0 run, Neuvirth has not played since the Flyers’ 4-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on March 3. This season, his first with the Flyers, Neuvirth has posted a 16-8-4 record with a 2.29 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. He’s also added three shutouts.
Mason has a 16-15-7 record this season, along with a 2.56 GAA, .916 save percentage and four shutouts. He is in his fourth season with Philadelphia.
Stolarz has a 19-14-6 record this season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. The 22-year old has posted a 2.57 GAA, .917 save percentage and no shutouts. Although he has been called up at different times, he is yet to appear in an NHL game this season.
