Sheldon Souray is on his way back to Edmonton, as per NHL waiver regulations, he must first land, then he will be formally assigned back to the AHL and head back to Hershey – the sweet life of an AHL’er. But now on to real news, the Oilers are sellers & the trade deadline is only six sleeps away.
The Oilers may have the 2 most coveted players in play as we etch closer to Monday – will they be Oilers for much longer? Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner have emerged as bonafide top 6 forward producers – at times showing they can play on any team’s first line.
So what’s their price? Steve Tambellini has apparently set the bar high and has put an emphasis on getting a package in return that includes NHL ready players, prospects & picks for each of them. The Oilers believe there are suitors out there. Los Angeles, Columbus, Nashville, Atlanta, Montreal, Washington, Pittsburgh, Sather’s Rangers – could all be involved in the sweepstakes.
Even though I’d hate to see Ales go, his value may never be higher than now. One team that continues to surface on a daily basis, linked to Ales Hemsky, are the Los Angeles Kings. Let’s throw out a deal: Wayne Simmonds, Oscar Moller and LA’s 1st round pick in 2011 for Ales Hemsky. This gives the Kings a top line of Marco Sturm – Anze Kopitar – Ales Hemsky.
Wayne Simmonds immediately replaces Ales as a top 2 line right wing, while the addition of Oscar Moller (Yes, he’s Swedish) allows Andrew Cogliano, Gilbert Brule or Liam Reddox to be dumped at the deadline or allowed to walk at the end of the season. With all that being said adding another high draft pick. I like this deal because it gives the Oilers a big body, and another highly skilled Swede to blend in with the other Swede’s already in Edmonton.
Now I’m going to do something that I’ve always wanted to do – trade Dustin Penner. His value has never been higher; a big body that can score would be quite enticing to a playoff contending team. How good would Penner look alongside Plekanec & Cammalleri? A lot better than Jeff Halpern I suppose?
Max Pacioretty and Jared Tinordi for Dustin Penner, the Oilers get a left winger in Max Pacioretty who jumps right into the line-up while Jared Tinordi is the big mean defenseman of the future. Dustin makes space for the Plekanec & Cammalleri, becomes a hit in Montreal.
With the emergence of Theo Peckham, Jeff Petry, and Taylor Chorney – a couple of defensemen could be heading out of town. Ladislav Smid and Jim Vandermeer could be on the outside looking in come Monday. First off let’s get Jim to playoff team. Jim goes to Carolina for a 5th round pick in 2011 – simple.
For the final Oilers trade of the day, not only is Laddy Smid exiting but a couple of forwards too. The trade goes down like this: Ladislav Smid, Andrew Cogliano and the expiring contract, fan favourite Ryan Jones to Florida in exchange for Stephen Weiss and a conditional draft pick.
My thoughts go down like this: As stated previously Smid is on the outside looking in, Andrew Cogliano’s and Ryan Jones’ value may never be higher than it is now so it’s time to sell high. While the Oilers get a proven top 2 centerman back in Stephen Weiss, who possibly just needs a change of scenery to get his full potential realized. The condition on the pick is whether Ryan Jones resigns with Florida or not.
IN: Wayne Simmonds, Oscar Moller, LA 1st round pick 2011, Max Pacioretty, Jared Tinordi, Carolina 5th round pick 2011, Stephen Weiss & a conditional 2011 pick from Florida.
OUT: Ales Hemsky*, Dustin Penner, Jim Vandermeer, Ladislav Smid, Andrew Cogliano & Ryan Jones*
There you have it; the Oilers roster has been forever altered for the good of the future. The asterisks* denotes, “hopefully it doesn’t come to this – you should stay an Oiler.” Trade deadline day/week is a great time of year, it’s practically a national holiday – so sit back, relax and let the trades begin.
