Connor McDavid Breaks Olympic Record for Most Points in Single Tournament

Connor McDavid has collected his 12th point of the Olympic tournament, surpassing both Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne for the most points in one tournament featuring NHLers.

McDavid’s Olympic participation is something hockey fans have been waiting over a decade to see, and now that the time has arrived, he has not disappointed. Through each of his first three games, McDavid posted three points in each outing for a total of nine points in the preliminary round.

Heading into the quarterfinal matchup against Czechia, it was the first game with high stakes for Team Canada and McDavid. He registered two points, tying both Selanne and Koivu.

During the semi-final game against Team Finland, McDavid got an assist on Sam Reinhart’s goal, giving him the record.

There have been a few other names popping onto the top line, but the trio of Macklin Celebrini, McDavid, and either Tom Wilson or Nathan MacKinnon has been unbeatable. McDavid has been showcasing his speed, great playmaking, and his usual brilliance. To most hockey fans, seeing McDavid do this isn’t all that surprising, but to do it on the international stage is special.

McDavid has brought his team so close to winning on multiple occasions, and he has proven to be the one to do everything needed to win. At the 4 Nations Face-Off, he finished second in points, and now at the Olympics, there doesn’t appear to be much competition for him in the point-scoring category.

Team Canada was the favourite coming into the tournament, and have one of the best rosters Olympic hockey has ever seen. Even with a superstar lineup, somebody has to take the lead. Sidney Crosby holds the captaincy, and rightfully so, but McDavid has two Stanley Cup Finals under his belt, plus the 4 Nations. He knows what high-stakes games feel like and is ready for them.
