Ducks Dominate Oilers With 6-2 Victory

The Anaheim Ducks travelled to Edmonton for a Tuesday night tilt (March 4) against the Oilers at Rogers Place. This Pacific Division showdown saw the Ducks dismantle the Oilers 6-2. Anaheim scored six unanswered goals to complete the road upset. This was a convincing victory, so with that said, here’s your game recap.

Game Recap

Edmonton opened the scoring on the power play midway through the first period. Connor McDavid toe-dragged around the defender and found Leon Draisaitl for the one-timer for his league-leading 45th goal of the season.

A few minutes later, Anaheim tied the game. Draisaitl turned the puck over, and it landed on the stick of Leo Carlsson, whose quick shot beat goaltender Calvin Pickard blocker side. Then, Anaheim took the lead courtesy of Mason McTavish. His wrister from the left faceoff dot beat the Oilers’ netminder for his 15th of the season. The Ducks extended their lead with 1:34 left in the period. The point shot was redirected by Sam Colangelo, off an Oilers defender, and into the net. 12 seconds later, the Ducks made it 4-1 with McTavish’s second of the game. Anaheim won a puck battle, and McTavish made no mistake. Rogers Place was stunned as the road team had a 4-1 lead heading into the intermission. Pickard was pulled and replaced by Stuart Skinner.

The Ducks continued to pour it on as they made it 5-1, 13:22 into the middle frame. Ryan Strome redirected Jackson LaCombe’s centring pass for his 10th of the season. They took that commanding lead into the dressing room.

The third period started with Alex Killorn scoring on a breakaway, going blocker side for his 12th of the season 3:56 into the period. Less than a minute later, the Oilers made it 6-2 for their second power-play goal of the contest. McDavid used his speed to drive hard to the net and slid the puck under the pad of goaltender Lukas Dostal. That was all the scoring, as Anaheim cruised to the victory.

LaCombe registered three assists, and he and Radko Gudas were both a plus-5. Draisaitl, Matt Savoie, and Brett Kulak were a putrid minus-4, with Anaheim outscoring Edmonton 6-0 at 5-on-5. Dostal was great in this one, stopping 33 of 35 shots for a .943 save percentage (SV%) in the victory. He’s the only Ducks netminder to beat Edmonton in the last five seasons.

The Ducks have a short turnaround as they conclude their mini two-game road trip on Wednesday (March 5) against the Vancouver Canucks. Meanwhile, the Oilers continue their three-game homestand on Thursday (March 6) against the Montreal Canadiens.
