NHL Rumors: Tuch Talk, Nylander and Matthews Trades, Draisaitl Injury Update

In today’s NHL Rumors Rundown, the Buffalo Sabres continue to work on an extension for Alex Tuch. Where are things at? Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are facing growing noise around William Nylander, and Auston Matthews’ future remains a talking point. That’s what happens when rumors surface that the team was willing to trade Matthew Knies. Finally, the Edmonton Oilers are dealing with an injury concern involving Leon Draisaitl. How long will he be out of action?

Are the Maple Leafs more likely to pivot off of a Knies trade and focus on one of the big two?

Sabres, Alex Tuch Working Toward Extension

The Buffalo Sabres are hoping to keep Alex Tuch in the fold long-term, but contract negotiations could get complicated. According to Pierre LeBrun, both sides have mutual interest in an extension, yet the lack of elite talent in this summer’s free-agent class could drive Tuch’s asking price higher.

If no deal is reached before July 1, Tuch could become one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.

Nylander Facing Scrutiny in Toronto

Tension continues to build around William Nylander and the Toronto Maple Leafs following criticism of his response to a hit on Auston Matthews. Nylander’s perceived lack of urgency and engagement has drawn heat, including from Sid Seixeiro, who emotionally questioned his value to the team.

Adding fuel to the fire, Nick Kypreos revealed the organization has been open to trade conversations involving the star winger. With Nylander locked into a long-term deal, any potential move would be complicated—but the idea is no longer off the table as Toronto evaluates its direction.

Kypreos said, “I did hear that they were open to having conversations about Willie, and they should. I would explore everything, including Willie and Austin, going into this off-season and seeing what kind of return I can get.”

Maple Leafs Staying Patient on Matthews

While speculation swirls around Nylander, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving made it clear there are no immediate plans to address Auston Matthews’ future. The focus remains on finishing the season strong, with 14 games left on the schedule.

Treliving emphasized that Matthews is under contract and that any deeper discussions will take place in the offseason. He also pushed back on the idea of major roster changes right now, noting the team still believes it can turn things around. That said, he didn’t completely rule out moves this summer as the team looks at every option.

Oilers Monitoring Draisaitl Injury

The Edmonton Oilers are keeping a close eye on Leon Draisaitl after he was evaluated for a lower-body injury. Head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed the star forward visited a doctor, though no clear timeline has been established.

It is unlikely he will play on Tuesday night, as the Oilers host the San Jose Sharks. Knoblauch said, “I think we’ll be some time without him. I’m not sure if it’s one or two (games) or how long it’s going to be. I don’t have much information right now.”

The good news is that this Draisaitl injury is considered day-to-day. The bad news is that the Oilers haven’t secured anything yet, and this current homestand is extremely important.

Malkin Talks Status With Penguins

Is Evgeni Malkin any closer to signing an extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins? The veteran forward commented on his status with the team and noted conversations with GM Kyle Dubas. He clarified, “I can’t say anything. We talked probably two weeks ago. He told me we would talk this summer. I’m OK with that. We have 15 games left, I hope playoffs. I want to just play. He asked if I wanted to play next year. I said yes. He said, “Don’t worry, we talk after the season.” I’m OK (with that). I feel great. I want to play next year, too. Maybe two years. Who knows? Again, it’s just business.”
