The Philadelphia Flyers went 2–1–0 last week, improving their record but not their bleak playoff odds. In this week-ahead breakdown, we’ll look at the team’s trade deadline, an impressive performance from the kids, and more.
Flyers’ Trade Deadline in Review
The Flyers made a big move at the trade deadline but were otherwise fairly quiet. On March 6, winger Bobby Brink was moved to the Minnesota Wild for defenseman David Jiříček in a one-for-one swap.
Brink is an excellent get for Minnesota. He can play middle-six minutes and provide a two-way boost at a low cap number ($1.5 million per season).
That said, the Flyers didn’t really have a choice in the matter. They had (and still have) too many top-nine-caliber wingers even without Alex Bump, Tyson Foerster, or Porter Martone in the lineup. Plus, by shipping out Brink, the hopeful face of the franchise, Matvei Michkov, was able to return to his typical right-wing position in the team’s first post-deadline game.

As for what the Flyers are getting back, Jiříček is a bet on upside. He was taken with the sixth-overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets, shipped to Minnesota for futures a little over two years later, and now is a member of the Orange and Black.

At 6-foot-4 and 204 pounds, it might seem like Jiříček is a two-way defenseman. In reality, what will make him successful at the next level is his offense. The 22-year-old has a great shot, can quarterback a power play, and move the puck. However, he’s an awkward skater and is prone to defensive miscues.
Jiříček made his Lehigh Valley Phantoms debut in the American Hockey League (AHL) on March 7. He recorded a goal, four shots, and a minus-1 rating in a 5–4 overtime defeat. If he pans out, the Flyers may have a top-four offensive defenseman on their hands.
The Flyers’ other moves were less impactful. They shipped off enforcer Nicolas Deslauriers to the Carolina Hurricanes for a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick. A prospect swap with the Boston Bruins concluded the action, with forwards Alexis Gendron and Massimo Rizzo going out, and defenseman Jackson Edward and forward Brett Harrison coming in.
Youngsters Excel in Flyers’ Road Win vs. Penguins
Key absences opened the door for experimentation against the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 7. The Brink trade and Travis Konecny being sidelined allowed for two things: Michkov to play on the right wing and Bump to make his NHL debut.
Neither of them disappointed. Bump tied the game 2–2, becoming the first Flyer since Hayden Hodgson on March 24, 2022, to score a goal in his debut. Overall, the 22-year-old was terrific for the Orange and Black, providing an offensive spark.
Alex Bump scored his first career NHL goal on his first shot and became the most recent player to tally in their debut with the @NHLFlyers since Hayden Hodgson on March 24, 2022. #NHLStats

Then, youngsters Denver Barkey and Michkov joined in on the fun. They were united on a line and created constant havoc. This led to another game-tying goal, 3–3, in the second period.
Both under six feet tall, some fans don’t see Barkey and Michkov as a viable duo. But their smarts and hardworking nature were too much to handle for Pittsburgh, contributing to a 4–3 shootout win.
