On Tuesday, March 25, the Ottawa Charge hosted the New York Sirens for their final meeting of the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. While the Charge have won the season series 4-1, the Sirens did not give up. New York took the victory 6-3.
Sirens Make Historic Comeback
At the end of the second period, the Sirens were down by a three-goal deficit; things were not looking good. By the halfway point of the third period, the Sirens had tied it 3-3. By the time the game ended, the score was 6-3. The Sirens not only made a huge comeback, but it was the first comeback of its kind in PWHL history. New York also set the PWHL record for the most goals scored in a period. The record was previously four goals, now the Sirens have set it at six.

The Sirens also denied the Charge any shots in the third period, outshooting them 18-0. This is now the largest shot differential in a single period in PWHL history.
What began as a blowout game for the Charge turned into a historic victory for the Sirens.
Two Sirens Players with Two Goals Each
Both Jade Downie-Landry and Sarah Fillier recorded two goals in the third period. Downie-Landry’s two goals were bookended by Fillier’s two goals.
Three minutes after Jessie Eldridge opened the scoring for the Sirens, Fillier got her first goal on the board. Eldridge dropped the puck down for Ella Shelton at the blue line. She passed to Fillier to her left. Fillier skated up towards the net and took a shot. The puck found the top corner of the net, and she scored the second goal of the game for the Sirens.
Three minutes after Eldridge’s goal, Downie-Landry scored her first. The Sirens won the faceoff, and Brooke Hobson sent the puck down to Downie-Landry at the blue line. She took a blast of a shot and buried it into the back of the net.
Just four minutes after her first goal, she recorded her second of the night. Off a botched pass by the Charge, she picked up the puck and sent another blast Gwyneth Philips’ way. The puck once again found its way into the back of the net.
Before this game, Downie-Landry only had one goal to her name this season. With the two assists she had already recorded, this brought her point total to five.

With eight minutes left in the game, Fillier gained control after another missed pass by the Charge. She picked up the loose puck from where she was in front of the net. She took another shot, which went to the left of Philips and into the back of the net.
Not only did two players score two goals in this game, but Alex Carpenter and Eldridge also recorded two points from a goal and an assist each. Brooke Hobson also recorded two points from two assists. Abby Roque, Shelton, Taylor Girard, and Micah Zandee-Hart recorded an assist each. With nine players all recording points, this late-game comeback was a huge team effort.
Fillier Back in the Lead for the League
So far this season, Fillier has been at the top of the pack for points overall in the 2024-25 PWHL season. She continues to bounce in and out of the number one spot, but with her two goals in this game, she is back in it. She has 27 points, while Hilary Knight is right below her with 26. While the race is a close one, Sirens fans should be happy that Fillier currently holds the number one spot.
Last season, Emma Maltais, Grace Zumwinkle, and Alina Muller were nominated for Rookie of the Year. Zumwinkle won the award and set the record for the most goals by a rookie at 11. With her two goals in this game, Fillier has surpassed that record, which now sits at 12 goals. As the season’s end draws nearer, Fillier should be in the discussion for Rookie of the Year this season.
Huge Game on Tuesday
The Sirens will take on the Montreal Victoire on Tuesday, April 1. This will be the last game for the Sirens before the break for the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championship. Following the break, the Sirens will have four more games left in the regular season.
