The San Jose Sharks joined the NHL ahead of the 1991-92 season when the Gund brothers, minority owners of the Minnesota North Stars, wanted to relocate the North Stars to the Bay Area. After the league vetoed that plan, a deal was struck that resulted in the Gunds selling their shares in the North Stars in exchange for having the opportunity to buy an expansion franchise. The Sharks struggled out of the gate and didn’t post a winning record until the 1999-00 season. What followed, though, was a period of consistent success that included 13 postseason appearances in 14 years and three trips to the Western Conference Final. While they have yet to win a Stanley Cup, they did reach the 2016 Stanley Cup Final, which they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Positive Takeaways From David Quinn’s Tenure as Sharks Head Coach

On Wednesday afternoon, San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier announced that David Quinn had been relieved of his duties as head coach of the organization. While Quinn’s coaching wasn’t perfect, it seems strange to fire him following a season where any type of success was impossible. Some criticized his ability to develop players over the years, yet last season, quite a few young players took a major step forward under his coaching.  A Short Stint in San Jose Quinn’s run in the Bay Area wasn’t a long one. The 57-year-old joined the Sharks prior to the 2022-23 season after…

Sharks Dismiss Head Coach David Quinn After 2 Seasons

The San Jose Sharks announced that they have fired head coach David Quinn after two seasons with the organization. Quinn posted a 48-91-25 record with San Jose, including a league-worst 19-54-9 this season. Quinn’s Unique Coaching Journey Unlike many NHL head coaches who are lifers in the league, Quinn took a more circuitous route. After medical issues limited him to two professional seasons as a player, both in the minor leagues, he began his coaching career as an assistant with a few different college programs and had a stint with the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP). He landed…

Pavelski and Hertl in Playoffs Represent How Sharks Went Wrong

The 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs are underway, and needless to say, the San Jose Sharks are not participating. An unsurprisingly poor season left them in last place in the NHL and represented the new lowest point of a gradual slide that began in the 2019 offseason. But Sharks fans will still have their eye on the playoffs and may be particularly interested in the series between the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars, featuring former Sharks stars Tomas Hertl and Joe Pavelski. Their exits from San Jose represent different stages of the Sharks’ recent decline, and their postseason clash will…
