3 Takeaways From the Sirens’ Strong 6-2 Win Over the Charge

On Sunday, March 8, the New York Sirens hosted the Ottawa Charge for a matinee matchup. This game marked the two teams’ third game of the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. Both teams had one win under their belt, so the season series was tied going into this game.

The Charge struck first early, but the goal was waived off for goaltender interference. In the second half of the first period, the Sirens scored three goals, and the Charge scored one, giving the Sirens a two-goal lead heading into the second period. There was no change in score after 40 minutes of play, which kept the Sirens in the lead.

The Charge scored early in the third period, but the Sirens scored three more in the final frame to win 6-2.

Sirens’ Offense Exploded

The Sirens scored six goals, and two players recorded multi-goal games. Both Taylor Girard and Sarah Fillier scored two goals to help propel their team to victory. Although she didn’t get the hat trick, Girard recorded her first hat trick against Ottawa in the Sirens’ season opener on Nov. 22. Fillier is still searching for her first PWHL hat trick.

On top of the impressive performance from Fillier and Girard, Maddi Wheeler opened the scoring, and Allyson Simpson scored her first goal of the season. In total, nine different Sirens players put their names on the scoresheet, and four players recorded multi-point games.

It was a healthy mix of both veterans and rookies getting into the scoring mix today. Everyone on the team pulled their weight, which resulted in a full team effort to earn the win. After the previous game against the Boston Fleet, the Sirens look like they are ready to continue their push through the remaining games of the 2025-26 season, and potentially to the postseason.

Sirens’ Penalty Kill Remained Strong

Both the Sirens and the Charge saw four penalties in this game, but the difference between Ottawa and New York was that the Sirens didn’t allow the Charge to score on the extra-player advantage. The Sirens even had a double-minor and saw two players in the box at the same time, but they didn’t falter. New York kept strong throughout and denied the Charge any extra chances to score.

Ironically enough, the Sirens have one of the worst penalty kills in the league. They are currently sixth on the penalty kill with a 78.7% success rate. Despite this, they haven’t allowed any goals on the power play for the opposing team, even when they have afforded the opposition 5-on-3 chances. The Sirens’ penalty kill is getting stronger, which is a great sign as the team progresses through the rest of the season.

Sirens Pick Up a Huge Three Points

With their regulation win over the Charge today, the Sirens just catapulted themselves back into fourth place. The Charge had just leapfrogged them in the standings, but now the Sirens are back in a postseason position.

The standings are still close, though. The Sirens just put themselves in this position with a one-point lead over Ottawa. Both teams don’t play again until this upcoming weekend, with three more games in between this week. The race is tight, but the Sirens can breathe a sigh of relief until Saturday when the Charge play again and Sunday when they get back on the ice.

Sirens Head to Denver

The Sirens will hit the road and take on the Minnesota Frost on Sunday, March 15, at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. This game will mark the second Takeover Tour stop in Denver this season.

The season series between the Charge and the Sirens will conclude on April 18 in Ottawa.
