Oilers Acquire Frederic & Jones in 3-Way Trade with Bruins and Devils

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones in a three-way trade between them, the Boston Bruins, and the New Jersey Devils.

The Bruins actually traded Frederic (50% salary retained) to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for unsigned draft pick Petr Hauser. The Devils then sent Frederic (50% salary retained) to the Oilers in exchange for unsigned draft pick Shane Lachance.

The Oilers are sending Maximus Wanner, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Bruins.

Oilers Bolster Forward Depth with Frederic Addition

Frederic, the biggest piece in the trade, has eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 57 games this season for a disappointing Bruins club. The 27-year-old’s numbers are a downturn from last season, when he set career highs in goals with 18 and points with 40. He is in the second-year of a two-year deal worth $2.3 million and will be an unrestricted free agent for the first time this offseason.

Frederic is currently out week-to-week with an lower-body injury and has missed the past four games. Despite that, he’s clearly someone Oilers general manager Stan Bowman wants in his lineup for what he hopes is a second-straight run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Frederic can play both centre and wing and is never shy to use his 6-foot-3, 221-pound frame to his advantage. In 337-career games, the Bruins’ 2016 29th-overall pick has 55 goals and 54 assists for 109 points.

Jones has spent most of this season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Providence Bruins, recording 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points in 31 games. The 2016 24th-overall pick of the Anaheim Ducks appeared in seven games for the Bruins this season, recording zero points. In 265-career NHL games, he has 31 goals and 31 assists for 62 points.

Struggling Bruins Have Shifted to Acquiring Future Assets

The Bruins, who sit an uncharacteristic seventh in the Metropolitan Division, are unlikely to make the playoffs and have shifted to acquiring prospects and future assets. Wanner fits the prospect bill, being a 21-year-old right-shooting defenseman in his second AHL season. This season with the Bakersfield Condors, the 2021 seventh-rounder has one goal and one assist in 22 games.
