Auston Matthews Records 100th Career Power Play Goal Against Golden Knights

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews hit another milestone last night in the game against the Vegas Golden Knights. His goal on the Maple Leafs’ power play in the second period gave him his 100th career power play goal.

He now ranks third all-time in Maple Leafs history in power play goals and only the third player in franchise history to hit the 100 power play goal mark. He ranks behind two Maple Leafs legends, Darryl Sittler who has 120 goals and Mats Sundin who has 124 goals.

Although it isn’t the flashiest goal or milestone of his career, it is still an impressive one to reach.

Matthews’ Goal-Scoring Dominance Continues

Matthews entered the NHL as a highly touted goalscorer, and through his nine seasons in the league, he has not disappointed. He has amassed 391 career goals, including six 40+ goal seasons and two 60+ goal seasons. The most he has ever scored in a single season was 69 last year. Unfortunately, this season, he missed some time due to an injury that appears to have slowed down his goal-scoring pace.

Matthews is only in his age-27 season and has already spent nine seasons in the NHL. During that time, he has dominated and become one of, if not the best, goalscorers of his generation. After watching Alex Ovechkin chase Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record, you have to wonder—if Matthews continues scoring 40 or 50+ goals per season, could he eventually challenge Ovechkin (once he passes Gretzky) for the most goals in NHL history?

Leafs Nation is witnessing one of the best players in franchise history, who could very well go down as the greatest to ever wear the blue and white. Seeing him eclipse the 100 power-play goal mark is just another step in his incredible journey as a Maple Leaf.
