Last night, the NHL announced a few individual season awards now that the 2024–25 season has come to an end. One of the awards handed out was the Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy, which goes to the player who led the NHL in goals.
The 2024-25 Rocket Richard winner is Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl — the first time in his career. Last season, he finished second behind Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews. But this year, he got off to a great start and led the league wire to wire.
Draisaitl scored 52 goals in 71 games this season, which was seven more than William Nylander, who finished second. It’s the fourth time in his career that he’s hit the 50-goal mark. He scored in 42 of his 71 games and had a stretch where he scored in seven straight games from Feb. 4 to 27.

He now joins Connor McDavid (2022–23), Wayne Gretzky (five times, most recently in 1986–87), and Jari Kurri (1985–86) as the only Oilers to win the Rocket Richard Trophy.
Even though he missed some time at the end of the season, he and the Oilers are now set to face the Los Angeles Kings for the fourth straight year. Game 1 goes Monday, April 21 in Los Angeles.
