On Trade Deadline eve, the Winnipeg Jets headed into Newark, New Jersey to face the New Jersey Devils. Brandon Tanev made his Jets debut, logging 11:28 of ice time in a 6-1 win. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 22 of 23 (.956%). The Jets improve to 44-16-4; the Devils fall to 33-25-6.
Both teams played a pretty even and intense first period, but it was the Jets who struck first as Alex Iafallo backhanded a rebound home for his 9th of the season. It came right after newly extended Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic nearly scored.
Early in the second, Devils’ netminder Jacob Markstrom came too far out to play a puck and gave it away, forcing Kovacevic to take a holding penalty. Josh Morrissey scored on the ensuing man advantage to make it 2-0 Jets. Then Nikolaj Ehlers made it 3-0, adding some breathing room.

The Devils grabbed some momentum back early in the third, as Dawson Mercer one timed a puck past Hellebuyck to cut it to 3-1. But they couldn’t build off it, and then Simon Nemec gave the puck away to Adam Lowry, who buried it to make it 4-1 Jets. For good measure, Kyle Connor made it 5-1 with a picture-perfect snipe over Markstrom’s shoulder. Then Cole Perfetti continued the onslaught very late, jamming a loose puck through to make it a 6-1 final.
The Jets will head south to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday (5:00 PM ET); the Devils will also play Sunday, as they face the Philadelphia Flyers (1:00 PM ET).
