Maple Leafs’ John Tavares Nominated for 2025 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

The Toronto chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has nominated Toronto Maple Leafs‘ forward John Tavares for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.

Why Was Tavares Nominated?

Tavares has demonstrated remarkable leadership on a Maple Leafs team that took away his captaincy and handed it to Auston Matthews last summer. His ability to overcome that, while continuing to perform at a high level despite the outside noise, makes him a strong candidate for the award. On top of that, being left off Team Canada’s 4-Nations Face-Off roster appeared to light a fire under him.

If he were to win, Tavares would join Jason Blake as the only other Maple Leaf to receive the honor. Blake won the award during the 2007-08 season after playing all 82 games while battling leukemia. Interestingly enough, Tavares’ current teammate Max Pacioretty won the award in 2011-12 after recovering from a broken neck suffered on a hit by Zdeno Chara — and went on to have the best season of his career.

Tavares is having one of his best seasons since signing a seven-year deal with Toronto in 2018. He’s scored 37 goals — the most since his first year with the Leafs — and added 34 assists for 71 points in 70 games. At 34 years old, he’s proving that he’s not ready to slow down or settle into a reduced role. Instead, he’s been one of Toronto’s most consistent players in a season many thought could be the worst of his contract.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is named after Bill Masterton of the Minnesota North Stars, who tragically remains the only NHL player to die as a direct result of injuries sustained in a game. Since 1968, the trophy has honored players who represent the values of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game.

As the Maple Leafs’ nominee, Tavares will join 31 other players from across the NHL. The Professional Hockey Writers Association will narrow the list down to three finalists before voting on a winner.

He’s in great company this year with fellow nominees like Sean Monahan (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Pat Maroon (Chicago Blackhawks). While everyone nominated is deserving, only one player can take home the award. The winner will be announced at a later date — best of luck to all the nominees.
