Despite initially being seen as a bit meaningless, the players’ passion and determination made it clear that this game was about much more than just the tournament title. From the pre-game energy to the intense final moments, it was evident that players on both teams were fighting for pride, and that made all the difference in what turned out to be a captivating showdown. After such a thrilling and intense final, it will be hard to match that excitement over the rest of the regular-season games.
Item One: The Maple Leafs Showed Well During the Championship Game
Until Connor McDavid’s overtime winner, the truth is that he didn’t have that much of an impactful game. The same was true with Sidney Crosby, who had a quiet game. Even Cale Makar struggled over the first half of the game.
Yet, as the game progressed, McDavid, Crosby, and Makar each found ways to make their presence felt. For as little room as was generated on the ice, McDavid somehow found a way to get open and ultimately won the game with his clutch goal. At 35, Drew Doughty was one of the best defencemen on the ice. He showed leadership and composure throughout the game for someone who had only played six games in the regular season. Yes, McDavid’s goal was the game-winner, but the goalies didn’t get enough love. Jordan Binnington deserved the Player of the Game award after his remarkable play in the third period and overtime.

Both Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews made huge contributions in the final. Marner had two key assists in Canada’s win, including a beautiful feed to McDavid for the game-winner. Matthews was arguably the best player for Team USA, collecting two assists and showing his game in the tough overtime loss. His chemistry with the Tkachuk brothers was a highlight, with the trio combining for an early goal in the game. If you’re a Maple Leafs fan, you gotta wonder if Matthew Knies was watching and learning.
Item Two: Mitch Marner Shines in 4 Nations Face-Off
Mitch Marner had an eventful journey through the 4 Nations Face-Off, starting on a powerful line with McDavid but eventually moving to the third line. Despite the lineup shuffle, Marner proved his value. He finished the competition as one of Canada’s standout forwards, especially during the final. While not the tournament’s overall MVP, his play in the critical moments was crucial to Canada’s win. Without his overtime goal against Sweden, Canada would have had no hope of coming out on top.

In the final, Marner’s assists were both vintage Marner. The first came when he made a perfect pass through the U.S. defence to Sam Bennett, who lifted a pinpoint shot past Connor Hellebuyck. His second assist was even more impressive—a smooth feed to a wide-open McDavid for the game-winner in overtime. Marner finished the tournament with a goal, two assists, and three shots. Although he seemed absent at times during the tournament, he elevated his game last night. You gotta believe he’ll be pumped heading into the Maple Leafs’ playoff run.
Item Three: Auston Matthews Shines Despite Tough Loss
Matthews had a stellar game last night. If not for a standout game by Binnington, he might have been the tipping point in a Team USA victory. He was the best American player on the ice, contributing two assists in the 3-2 overtime loss to Canada. Early in the game, coach Mike Sullivan moved Matthews to a line with Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk, replacing Jack Eichel. That shift paid immediate dividends when Brady scored on the line’s second shift.

Over the tournament, Matthews finished with three assists in three games. He again showed that he is an elite two-way player. However, fans have to wonder if his upper-body injury flared up during the 4 Nations. When Matthews returns to the Maple Leafs, will he need a game off?
What’s Next for the Maple Leafs?
When the NHL’s regular season resumes on Saturday, the Maple Leafs’ next five games will test their endurance. They will play against the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins, so they must stay sharp and energetic.

These games come fast, with back-to-backs. As a result, building a solid goalie rotation will help Toronto survive and prosper. It helps that Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz are both back and playing solid hockey. Sharing the load by giving each other a chance to rest could help the team maintain consistent performance.
It’s not just the Maple Leafs facing this challenge. It’s true across the league. But if the Maple Leafs goalie duo can crush it in the crease, the team should be able to stay competitive.
