NHL Rumors: Canucks Changes, Ovechkin Shuns Crosby, Pronger Explains Oilers Exit

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, Chris Pronger revisits his controversial departure from the Edmonton Oilers and says long-standing speculation about the situation was wrong. Meanwhile, Elliotte Friedman suggests the Vancouver Canucks could be preparing for major changes within their pro scouting department. Finally, Alex Ovechkin’s emotional night against Pittsburgh has sparked debate over his retirement plans.

From off-ice regrets to front-office uncertainty and superstar farewell watch, there are plenty of topics to discuss with just a few games remaining in the regular season.

Pronger Revisits Oilers Exit, Admits “Bad Decision” Behind the Scenes

Chris Pronger is offering a new explanation for one of the most debated departures in Edmonton Oilers history, insisting that years of rumors surrounding his exit from the Oilers are inaccurate. In his new book Earned, the Hall of Fame defenseman says his brief time in Edmonton ended not because he hated Edmonton or because his wife did, but due to a personal mistake he made during his contract negotiation.

Pronger explains that after initially agreeing with his wife to try Edmonton for one season, things changed during a late-night call with his agent while Pronger had been drinking. The Oilers wanted a longer commitment, and Pronger ultimately agreed to a five-year extension without discussing it with his wife.

“You want to talk about breaking trust? You want to talk about the moment a marriage gets tested? I was telling my wife that I’d just committed five years of her life to a city she’d never lived in, never been to, in a country she wasn’t from, with two kids under three, without even asking her opinion.”

He called it a major lapse in judgment that he later “owned”, but one that damaged trust at home and led him to request a trade after just one year. He said it was never about not liking Canada or Edmonton, but that he screwed up in his marriage by not communicating, and he chose to make it right.

Friedman Hints at Potential Overhaul in Canucks Scouting Department

Meanwhile, in Vancouver, insider Elliotte Friedman raised eyebrows during a recent 32 Thoughts podcast, suggesting the Canucks could be preparing changes within their pro scouting department. While management-level changes may also occur, Friedman indicated that they may extend deeper into the organization.

He noted that in Vancouver—and with the New Jersey Devils—many staff members do not currently have contracts beyond this season. In the Canucks’ case, he suggested that nearly the entire scouting group is unsigned, creating significant uncertainty heading into the offseason. Friedman explained that while this kind of situation can sometimes be part of normal negotiations, it may also signal that the organization is considering a full reset in that area.

Ovechkin Gesture Sparks Anti-Retirement Buzz

Alex Ovechkin’s refusal to take part in a goodbye handshake line with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night has fueled speculation about his future. After what may have been his final home game against Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby and the Penguins intended to wait for him to take in the fans’ appreciation before shaking hands. It was a gesture by a longtime rival in Crosby to show their respect.

Instead, Ovechkin waved off the Penguins, leading to widespread debate about his intentions.

Not meant to be disrespectful, many fans believe the gesture reflects Ovechkin not being ready to say goodbye. The Capitals star has not confirmed retirement, and despite turning 40, he remains productive with 32 goals this season. Post-game interactions still included stick signings and photos, but he’s not officially called it a career yet.

When asked about fan chants urging him to return for another year, Ovechkin responded only that he would “think about it,” leaving the door open for another season.
