NHL Rumors: Hellebuyck to Avs, Larkin’s List, Mammoth Match Offer Sheet

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Utah Mammoth make a key decision on Barrett Hayton, the Carolina Hurricanes are once again linked to aggressive offer-sheet tactics, the Colorado Avalanche are loosely tied to Connor Hellebuyck speculation, and the Detroit Red Wings continue to hold firm on Dylan Larkin’s future.

Mammoth Match Hayton Offer Sheet, Keep Core Intact

The Utah Mammoth made it clear they aren’t willing to lose key pieces of their roster, officially matching the New Jersey Devils’ offer sheet for forward Barrett Hayton. The deal keeps Hayton in Utah on a one-year contract worth $4.775 million.

General manager Bill Armstrong emphasized Hayton’s importance to the team, citing his versatility and reliability at both ends of the ice. The 26-year-old center has quietly become a steady contributor, coming off a 25-point campaign in 67 games last season and a career-best showing the year prior.

By matching the offer, Utah avoids losing a former top-five pick and a player who has grown alongside their young core. However, the team can’t trade him for a full year, which means if he wants to walk in free agency at the end of the year, there isn’t anything the Mammoth can do to stop him. Any player signed to a one-year contract is eligible to extend after Jan. 1.

Hurricanes Linked to Edvinsson, Offer Sheet Strategy in Focus

The Carolina Hurricanes continue to be one of the most intriguing teams in the rumor mill, with reports suggesting interest in Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The 23-year-old blueliner is coming off his entry-level deal and could be a prime offer-sheet target.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Carolina has explored creative ways to improve its roster, including using offer sheets as a weapon. With ample draft capital and cap flexibility, the Hurricanes are one of the few teams positioned to make a serious run at a player like Edvinsson.

Complicating matters is Carolina’s own situation with Alexander Nikishin, whose contract demands may be climbing higher than the team is comfortable with. Could Edvinsson emerge as a viable alternative?

Avalanche Rumors Swirl Around Hellebuyck Interest

A curious bit of speculation has surfaced involving the Colorado Avalanche and Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. According to reports relayed by Friedman, some around the league believe Colorado at least explored the possibility of acquiring the star netminder.

“By the way, I had a couple of teams say to me they wondered if Colorado took a shot at Connor Hellebuyck,” Friedman said. “I don’t know how that could work, I don’t know what they would offer, and I’m not sure that Winnipeg would want to see that. But there were a couple of teams that were like, they kind of suspected that the Avalanche considered it.”

There’s no indication serious negotiations took place. Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million cap hit, which would require Colorado to move out salary, and the Avalanche may lack the assets needed to entice Winnipeg.

Red Wings Holding Firm on Larkin Despite Trade Talk

Dylan Larkin’s name continues to circulate in trade rumors, but the Detroit Red Wings aren’t budging on their stance. The captain has reportedly not expanded his three-team trade list, which includes the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and Florida Panthers.

So far, none of those teams have presented an offer that meets Detroit’s expectations. General manager Steve Yzerman is believed to be seeking NHL-ready talent rather than futures.

Each potential destination faces obstacles, whether it’s financial limitations or reluctance to part with key players. As it stands, the most likely outcome is that Larkin remains in Detroit to start the season.
